KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The Department of Children's Services says it had investigated a complaint of child abuse or neglect in a Knoxville home where a boy was later fatally beaten.
The Knoxville News Sentinel reported on the death last month of 5-year-old Robert Reyes, and a family member told the paper he alerted DCS last year after seeing bruises on the child.
The live-in boyfriend of the boy's mother was indicted last week. The grand jury charged 23-year-old Tyrail J. Cooke with felony murder and aggravated child abuse in the Oct. 20 attack.
DCS spokesman Brandon Gee confirmed prior investigations into allegations of abuse and/or neglect, dating back to 2008.
Gee declined to reveal the results of those inquiries, saying there is an ongoing investigation following the boy's death.
