Daughter remembers elderly man killed while walking

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Walking along Old Rutledge Pike was a daily ritual for 90 year-old James Morgan, known as "Jay-Bird".

Three times a day, he would walk from his home to Town and Country Market.

Hi daughter, Kimberley Severs, said she's angry someone hit and killed him during one of those walks. "I'm mad at the person who hit him. Really mad and upset, but I always think about what my daddy would tell me. He would say, 'Now, Kim. It was an accident. He didn't mean to do it. You can't hold it against him.'"

Morgan lived with his daughter, just one block from where he was hit. He grew up on a nearby farm, a place he worked until he was 85.

Cattle Farmer John Nicely said, "He knew a lot about the birds and the flowers and the garden and when to plant this and when to do that and how to work with cattle. He worked the teams as a young man and he just... was an amazing creature. He loved every minute of every day."

The so-called "Mayor of Mascot", dad to many, grandfather and husband, leaves a long legacy behind.
