KNOXVILLE AND SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - The national gun debate goes local with a rallies here in east Tennessee.
Some rallied on Friday morning in Knoxville for more gun control. Tomorrow, hundreds are getting ready to rally for their right to bear arms.
"We all know, guns don't kill people. People kill people," said Mark Mikat.
Mikat fought for our country, to protect our freedom and our rights.
He feels one of the most basic is under attack.
"(The) Second Amendment, for at the minimum to protect ourselves against a tyrannical government, which I see happening right now," said Mikat.
In the wake of the Sandy Hook shootings, guns and ammunition have flown off the shelves in east Tennessee. That fear of tighter gun control is why folks will be gathering in Severally tomorrow for the East Tennessee Day of Resistance.
"If we don't keep our guns, the criminals will just get more and more of their way, and we just have more problems," said Mikat.
On the other side of the spectrum, 15 people rallied in Knoxville Friday morning in memory of the more than 2,000 Americans killed by gun violence since Sandy Hook.
"Gun violence in America has reached the stage of carnage, and people just accept it. And it's time we tried to do something," said William Cache, who attended the rally.
This group wants to strengthen gun laws, restrict the access to assault weapons and also ammo.
"We need to be sensible enough to limit firepower on weapons that are intended to kill people," said Joan Nelson, who also attended the rally.
Even though both sides feel differently, one thing they both agree on is they'd like to see more available mental health care as a way to prevent more families from feeling pain.
The Day of Resistance Rally will be at Thompson Carr Real Estate and Auction in Severally. It starts at 11 am, and hundreds are expected to show up.
