2nd Monroe Co. escaped inmate turns himself in | UPDATE

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The second of two inmates who escaped from the Monroe County Jail in July has turned himself in to authorities.

Tony Joe "TJ" Carroll contacted the U.S. Marshal Service and said he was tired of running and that everywhere he went, law enforcement was there or had just been there. He also said he wanted to turn himself in.

Carroll was picked up by law enforcement in Polk County and was returned to Monroe County Jail custody.

Additional charges against Carroll are pending.

The other inmate who escaped, Ricky Burnett, was captured shortly after the escape.


One of two inmates who escaped from the Monroe County Jail last week has been captured.

Ricky Burnett was taken into custody in Madisonville around 2:30 p.m. Friday.

Burnett faces additional charges of escape and theft of property.

The other escaped inmate, Tony Carroll, remains on the run.

Monroe County officials are looking for two inmates who were working off-site at a convenience center when they stole a site supervisor's SUV and drove away.

The men are reported to be in a 2006 gold Ford Explorer with TN tags 325 RMV.

One inmate, Tony Joe Carroll, was in prison on charges of theft, vandalism, auto burglary, and destruction of valuable papers.

The other, Ricky Burnette, was charged with driving on a suspended license, manufacture of schedule II, drug paraphernalia, and violation of parole.
