KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) Nearly 81% of Americans admit to interrupting a conversation to check their phones. Many of us are distracted by smartphones, tablets, computers... sometimes all of them at once. Is it time for a digital detox?
It's an idea that came from former Facebook executive Randi Zuckerberg. She suggested that many of us need time to unwind while "unplugged" before we let our devices own us.
Knoxville psychologist Dr. Ron Brown says it's a trend that could eventually change our social interactions and already has for some people.
"The phenomenon of people taking pictures of everything... it's kind of like someone coming up and saying, 'Have you seen my grandkids?' And they pull out this wallet of 20 kids or more. The first 2 or cute, but then give me a break. Seems a bit narcissistic," said Dr. Brown.
Some believe we're seeing a new social disease called "Fear of Missing Documentation." Many of us spend so much time behind our screens that we're failing to live in the moment.
Dr. Brown, however, believes this incessant need for technology is a trend that's growing but will eventually calm. Until then, time away from the device is good for health.
