Homeowner smells smoke & goes back to bed, calls 911 hours later

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A homeowner went back to bed after waking up in the middle of the night and smelling smoke in his downtown Knoxville home early Monday morning.

When he finally woke back up, around 7:00 a.m. he saw smoke filling his home, 717 Oldham St. He called firefighters and went outside.

Firefighters found the fire burning between the walls in a back bedroom and saw it had already worked its way into the attic. Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the fire, but do not suspect foul play.

After the fire, KFD's Capt. D.J. Corcoran reminded homeowners not to hesitate before calling 911.

"Remember, most fires start with just a spark, and the Knoxville Fire Department is on average, three to four minutes away, and eager to assist," he said. "KFD will also install smoke alarms free of charge to any City resident, by calling 595-4672."

KFD said the homeowner is expected to stay with relatives. No one was hurt in the fire.
