KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- At about 2:30 a.m. Saturday morning, the driver of a 2006 Honda, Tarayn Ryan, was traveling west on East Jackson Ave. when he disregarded a stop sign and turned left onto South Central Street.
Witnesses say Ryan then struck a 1997 Honda parked on South Central Street. There was a woman in the car who police say was not injured.
He then attempted to flee the scene, but struck the door of a Knoxville Police cruiser, which was also parked on South Central St. The suspect then continued south on South Central Ave.
Officer Woody Bingham was standing next to the door of his Knoxville Police cruiser when he heard the initial crash and saw the suspect vehicle approaching. He ran toward the rear of his cruiser to avoid being struck.
He then entered his damaged cruiser and followed the suspect vehicle. He found Ryan stopped at a traffic light at South Central St and Summit Hill.
Based on the preliminary investigation, it appears alcohol may have been a contributing factor.
