POWELL, Tenn. (WVLT) -- When that church bus careened across the interstate on Wednesday afternoon, it smashed into a Tahoe taking the life of someone who lives in Knox County. The man riding in the back of that SUV.
This accident really hits close to home. Twenty-four year-old Trent Roberts of Powell was killed. In an exclusive interview, his friends tell Local 8 News they will never forget him.
Those who knew Trent gathered at NOVA TCB, his dad owns this company and it's where Trent worked. They're leaning on scripture to get them through this terrible tragedy. Trent's family friend Jeff Robbins says, "Our tears are selfish. They're not tears of sorrow because of where he's at. We just miss him."
They remember him as always smiling and cracking jokes. Robbins says, "He lead the Forest Gump life with a straightforward vision, but if you got out of line he'd correct you."
Trent was coming home from a fishing trip in South Carolina with two buddies. Brother Tyler and their dad following behind in another car.
They watched the whole thing. Jonathan Troutman says, "Yesterday was all surreal. I've seen things on the news before, but it's always somebody else."
Jonathan Troutman shared an office with Trent. They were also life long best friends. Jonathan Troutman says, "He was just a really great guy to be around. Someone proud to call your friend."
His chair sits empty, but he is never gone. Robbins says, "Every morning we'd get together and do this huge high five down low and sometimes we thought we'd broke our hands. No one else would do it with him, but I'm going to miss that."
Trent's mom and dad didn't want to go on camera because they're too upset. Trent went to Powell High School and graduated last year from Roane State Community College. He would have turned 25 in two weeks.
