Elderly woman and her son die in Monroe County house fire

MADISONVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Authorities say an elderly woman and her son died Sunday in a house fire.

It happened on Short Bark Road in Madisonville around 9:30 AM.

Three fire departments within the county were dispatched to the blaze.

Officials have identified the victims as 86-year-old Louise Turner and 51-year-old William Vincent Turner.

Fire Chief Chad Leming tells Local 8 News it appears Louise was trying to help William out of the home, but they never made it out.

William was on oxygen and was recovering from a hip replacement.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire.
