Knoxville, Tenn. (WVLT) - Girls as young as 15 will soon be able to buy Plan B One- Step over the counter. Until now, anyone under 17 needed a prescription to buy the Morning-After Pill. The Food and Drug Administration decided, all someone needs is identification showing they are 15.
"I think it's great. I think that girls have the right to make decisions like that for themselves," said Lauren Stewart.
It's a hot topic of discussion- some see it as a form of abortion? But is it? Here's how it works. The pill doesn't end a pregnancy, if taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex, it just prevents fertilization.
Many parents told us they're outraged this decision can be made by someone so young.
"I don't think it's a good choice. I think that 15 yea- olds should have to go to their parents and be able to talk to someone about what's the best thing to do," said Barbara Campbell.
In a few months, girls even younger than 15 may be able to buy the Morning-After Pill, too.
We found out the pill costs about $50 and there are many side effects.
The Justice Department announced Wednesday night, it will appeal the judge's decision to lift the age limits.
