Fall fun starting with corn mazes

Updated: Sat 8:43 PM, Sep 15, 2012

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- It's a beautiful weekend, a great time for some family fun, and some fall festivities as well.

While the first official day of Autumn is September 22, this weekend a local seasonal favorite is starting, the corn maze.

"We expect a huge crowd because the weather is so nice. I mean it's not blistering hot like it usually is," explained Bob Schmidt, owner of Maple Lane Farms in Greenback.

The corn maze started Friday, and they're only open weekends the rest of September.

This is the 14th year, and you can find plenty of paths to take and get lost in the corn.

What you can't see from the ground is theme. Schmidt dedicated it to his East Tennessee roots, and from above it's all about Maryville College.

Schmidt said, "The corn looks fabulous this year, best crop ever for the corn maze." But, the extremely hot and dry conditions earlier in the Summer had him worried. "We waited, thankfully, to the very last minute and planted the corn for the corn maze, and we got those late rains that we had in August, which helped us out," he said.

Not only does it look good, there is plenty to do, including rides for your kids. "The kids that came with their families 14 years ago, are now bringing their families back, so we have a family tradition going on here," he explained.

To add to the fun, you can play in the picture back-drops with your family.

With Fall right around the corner, there is even more to look forward to. Including hay rides and pumpkin picking. Bob said, "The pumpkins are getting ripe, but we'll start picking pumpkins at the end of September."

If trying to find your way through corn isn't enough for you, you can always try your luck in the haunted corn maze that will start October 19th.
