KNOX CO. Tenn. (WVLT) -- A fiery crash shut down traffic on I-40 late Friday afternoon.
At approximately 5:14 p.m., KPD Officers along with KFD and Rural Metro EMS responded to a two-vehicle crash in the eastbound lane of Interstate 40 near the Oglesby Road overpass.
The preliminary investigation showed a van traveling westbound crossed the median and entered into the eastbound lane, striking a SUV.
Witnesses, who stopped to assist pulled the driver of the van out of the vehicle as it caught on fire.
Life-Star responded and evacuated one child from the scene due to serious injuries. There was one occupant in the van and four occupants in the SUV.
All occupants were transported to University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment.
According to KPD, witnesses indicated they could smell the odor of alcoholic beverages emitting heavily off his person. Officers located multiple beer cans inside and outside of the van.
Interstate 40 Eastbound was shut down for more than one hour. With the assistance of T-DOT, all traffic was routed off the interstate at the Asheville Highway interchange.
At approximately 6:28 p.m., Interstate 40 Eastbound was re-opened.
The Knoxville Police Department reconstruction team responded to the scene. They will conduct a follow-up investigation into how the crash occurred.
