Sevier Co. firefighters save turtle burned in house fire

SEVIER COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT)-- Sevier County fire crews saved a tortoise that was burned in a house fire early Saturday morning.

It happened on the 2900 block of Old Newport Highway around 6:30 a.m.

According to Capt. Stephanie Specht, no one was inside the home which was also a business. She told Local 8 News the tortoise was found near the structure that burned to the ground.

Capt. Specht said they used a pet oxygen mask on the tortoise, which had burned marks on its shell and was frothing from the mouth.

"After about 20 minutes it came back around," she said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
