Cocke Co. authorities investigating 'suspicious' fires along I-40

COCKE COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT)-- Authorities in Cocke County are investigating after several fires broke out along I-40 Sunday afternoon.

According to the Cocke Co. Fire Department, firefighters responded to 8-10 fires along the interstate from mile marker 439 to 432.

Fire Chief William Smallwood says it took firefighters nearly 3 hours to put them out.

Multiple fire agencies assisted including the Newport Fire Dept., and Cosby Volunteer Fire Dept. The Newport Rescue Squad also assisted.

One of the fires threatened two homes, according to Chief Smallwood.

Authorities say the fires are suspicious. The investigation is ongoing.
