Former deputy arrested for stealing car, DUI killed in wreck

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A former Knox Co. deputy who was fired after he was arrested for stealing a car and driving under the influence was killed in a wreck Monday night.

Jason Williams, 40, was thrown from his car when it hit a fence on West Racoon Valley Rd., according to the Knox Co. Sheriff's Office. He was pronounced dead a short time later at UT Meical Center.

Investigators said speed contributed to the crash.

Williams was assigned to the Radio Unit of the KCSO where he worked on two-way radios.

He was arrested in August after officers responded to a disturbance call at Cotton Eyed Joe's in west Knox Co. According to KCSO, Williams took a bag off a table and car keys. The owners found Williams in the parking lot with the bag and their cellphones.

Officers said the car was moved from where it was initially parked.

According to the incident report, Williams said that he got into the victim’s car and drove it, but decided not to take it and left it at the end of the parking lot.

Williams reportedly got into a physical fight with witnesses in the parking lot.
