Free admission to Knoxville Zoo this weekend

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Visitors to the Knoxville Zoo will enjoy free admission and parking during the zoo's annual Kroger Free Weekend Saturday and Sunday. The free wekeend gives everyone the opportunity to visit and is a way for the zoo to thank the community for its support, as well as help other local non-profit organizations.

A donation is not required to get free admission to the zoo, but Free Weekend visitors are encouraged to bring donated items to help Mission of Hope, Young-Williams Animal Center, the Blount County Humane Society and PAWS of KNoxville.

Mission of Hope offers assistance and resources to people living in poverty-stricken areas of rural Appalachia. In order to meet increased demand of the holiday season, they're asking for donations of non-perishable food, new children's toys and hygiene items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, bar soap, deodorant and shampoo.

Young-Williams and the Blount County Humane Society need dry and canned dog, cat, puppy and kitten food. The Humane Society has specifically requested Purina brand food. PAWS of Knoxville, which works to place adoptable senior pets with senior citizens needs wet and dry dog and cat food, along with flea and tick preventative and cat and dog toys.

Other organizations will be on site to provide information, including Florence Crittenton Foster Care, Relationship RX informational health service, the Salvation Army, Knoxville Habitat for Humanity, Muscular Dystrophy Association, the American Cancer Society, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, East Tennessee Children's Hospital, Goodwill, Second Harvest, and the United Way of KNoxville.

The Knoxville Zoo is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
