GATLINBURG, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Ober Gatlinburg is planning a big free event on Thursday to kick off the winter season at the ski resort.

Ober Gatlinburg is celebrating 50 years of skiing in Tennessee and they are planning a Back in Blue skiing and snowboarding even on Thursday, December 6, 2012.

Ober is planning the event on terrain that features the tubing park and will be followed by a ski and snowboard movie out on the snow.

The slopes will officially open to the public for the 2012/13 ski and snowboarding season as soon as temperatures allow for snow making. Snow tubing opened the earliest ever on November 16th.
