GATLINBURG, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A Gatlinburg couple hopes to raise thousands of dollars for Make A Wish through hiking in the Smokies.

Marc and Wendy Newland are trying to raise awareness and money for the group that helps kids wishes be fulfilled. The couple has joined a fundraising hike in North Carolina on May 30.

"There'll be a total of 75 hikers with us that day. Total we're all working to raise $500-thousand dollars for the cause," said Marc.

They have registered to hike 28 miles in one day for the 2015 Trailblaze Challengge. Last year the event raised $400,000 to help make these kids wishes come true.

Ultimately the couple hopes to raise awareness for the need in East Tennessee and hopefully get a chapter in Sevier County.

"It's just very rewarding. We try to give back as much as we can. Like I say mixing the hiking along with such a wonderful cause it just seemed like a no brainier for us for sure," Marc added.

They are hosting a fundraiser Friday, May 15, 2015 5-7:30 PM at Roaring Fork Baptist Church in Gatlinburg. The Spaghetti Dinner and Silent Auction will help raise the $5,000 they've committed to for the cause.
