Got allergies? What works and what doesn't

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)--Pollen. It's the enemy of everyone with allergies. Today was the highest pollen count yet. We may be able to help you with your suffering. Here's what works when it comes to allergy relief.

Trees are beautiful, and useful producing the oxygen we need. Sometimes the pollen they produce keeps us from breathing easy. Laura Odom with the Allergy, Asthma & Sinus Center says, "The worst thing we're seeing this time of year is runny nose, congestion, sneezing itchy eyes. We unfortunately have been seeing asthma flare ups."

It's hard to escape. Odom says, "We've actually found pollen two miles in sky and three miles out to sea."

If you're eyes are itchy or you can't stop sneezing try Claritin, Allegra or Zyrtec. For a runny nose, take Benedryl or Chlor-trimeton. To get rid of congestion, use a nasal steroid or decongestant. You can stop the suffering before it starts by minimizing your exposure. Odom says, "Exercise later in the day. Pollen tends to peak first thing in the morning."

Keep your windows closed at home and take a shower before bed, because pollen sticks in your hair. Odom says, "You hate to tell people to stay inside, but wearing a mask can be helpful especially if you're cutting the grass."

If none of those seem to work, allergy shots are a last resort.

Pollen is supposed to be bad again Wednesday, but storms are expected on Thursday. Rain will wash away the pollen and hopefully alleviate some of the problems.
