Great tools available for families dealing with Alzheimer's

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. September is World Alzheimer's Month - a great time to become aware of new, free tools and materials designed to help care for loved ones who are living with the disease.

Senior care experts will share information about local efforts to support families who are trying to cope with the challenging behaviors that often result from Alzheimer's and other dementias, including:

. A free Confidence to Care at Home kit, an at-a-glance collection of information, tips and resources to help handle difficult situations, avoid household accidents, encourage engagement and prevent caregiver stress that is designed for any member of the household to reference anytime they need it.

. The Alzheimer's and Other Dementias Daily Helper smartphone app that helps families find solutions when they have to react quickly to a difficult situation. Available September 16, this free app is designed to help families manage issues as they arise, whether at home or in public.

. Free workshop opportunities are available for family members where they will receive training to help them deal with the challenging behaviors that often result from Alzheimer's and other dementias. The Alzheimer's CARE: Changing Aging Through Research and Education workshop upcoming schedule is as follows:

o Tuesday, September 24, 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at MountainBrook Village Retirement Community, 700 Markhill Drive, Sevierville, TN
o Thursday, September 26, 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm , at Home Instead Senior Care, 2412 W. Andrew Johnson Hwy., Morristown, TN
