Hawkins schools finance chief fired after fines

ROGERSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Hawkins County Schools officials say they aren't confident a budget proposal they tentatively approved is sound.

According to the Kingsport Times-News, the proposal was prepared by former schools finance director Myron Dale, who was fired Monday. School officials said federal fines mounted to $166,000 when Dale failed to make an Internal Revenue Service withholding payment in March. Dale also presided over constructing the budget document.

At a meeting called on Monday to approve the 2013-14 school system budget, Board of Education Chairman Randy Collier said the board and the central office staff will recheck figures in the proposal and the board will meet June 27 to consider final approval.

Director of Schools Charlotte Britton said a consultant has also been hired to help ready the budget.
