Henley Street Bridge re-opening could be delayed

Knoxville, Tenn. (WVLT) - Scenic Knoxville - turned construction site. Road blocks plastered everywhere. For 80 years, the Henley Street bridge was the main entrance to the South side.

"We've lost a lot of traffic our traffic dropped from 35,000 cars per day to 5,000," said Wee Care business owner Fathi Husain.

The fewer number of cars coming in means less cash rolling through the doors.

"It's definitely affected our business since it's been closed like 20 percent," said Disc Exchange CEO John Bevis.

Wee care says they've seen a 50 percent decrease.

What's said to be a 2 1/2 year project could go longer. The price to fix this bridge could cost 25 million dollars. Tdot says three piers need rebuilding due to concrete deterioration.

"It's frustrating not just for us but everyone on this side of the bridge especially when you're hoping for it to be done at the end of June," said Bevis.

Both owners hope that they can hang on until the bridge is finished and business picks up again.
