High school teacher dies in wreck night before first day of classes

TOWNSEND, Tenn, (WVLT) -- A Heritage High School teacher died in a Sunday night car crash car crash in Townsend the night before school was set to start. According to the Blount Co Sheriff's Dept., James M. Roberts was killed after his truck went off the road and hit an embankment.

Reports indicate Roberts was heading north on Webb Road when his 2006 Chevrolet pickup went off the road near Berry Williams Road shortly before 8:00 p.m.

After getting the truck back onto the road, it went into oncoming traffic. Officials say that's when Roberts overcorrected and went off the right side of the road, into an embankment. His truck struck a tree, uprooting it, and causing the truck to roll over.

According to the Sheriff's Office, Roberts, who was not wearing a seat belt, was partially ejected . He was rushed ti Blount Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

School officials said Roberts' wife taught at Heritage HS as well. He leaves behind three children
