LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) -- Fire officials say eight thoroughbred horses have died in a barn fire near Keeneland racetrack.
Lexington Fire Department Battalion Chief Mark Harvey told local media that crews were called to the scene early Friday to find the barn fully engulfed in flames.
Employees working in the control tower at the nearby airport were the first to call in the fire.
Horse trainer Gerry Carwood said he was able to get two foals out of a smaller barn, but the heat and smoke were too much for him to get into the larger barn, which was destroyed by the time firefighters arrived.
Fire officials say the cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
