CAMPBELL COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) - Hundreds took to the streets of Campbell County Tuesday night in honor of 14-year-old Katelyn Norman, suffering from terminal cancer.
Before the vigil, family and friends gathered for a prom organized just for Katelyn, the first item on the bucket list the community's come together to help her complete.
"Nothing to be down. Nothing to be upset. We're sad that she's not here physically, but she's here in spirit," said school nurse Sharon Shepherd.
Shepherd organized the prom after Katelyn's mom asked for help in checking items off of Katelyn's list.
Shortly before, Katelyn was airlifted to East Tennessee Children's Hospital Tuesday after having difficulty breathing. Doctors decided they needed to keep her overnight, but Katelyn said the prom must go on.
Dozens filed into The Stables in LaFollete to dance, eat and take pictures in front of Italian backdrops, another attempt to fulfill Katelyn's bucket list wishes.
As the sun set, fireworks burst over prom and people lining the streets lit candles and flashlights to "Light the Night for Kate."
"Her whole life has been about... her whole fight, anyway, has been about, 'I'm not facing death. I'm inspiring others," said close friend Brandon Huckaby.
Huckaby planned the vigil after hearing Katelyn's doctors told her there was nothing else they could do.
"I had so much energy and this was a way to target it," said Huckaby.
Huckaby said he had no idea so many people would participate.
Dozens then formed a convoy to Knoxville to hold a vigil outside her window at ETCH. Family and friends threw a smaller prom at the hospital just for Katelyn.
The community continues to support Katelyn by wearing green, tying green bows around town, and sending good wishes to the family.
