KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) Hundreds of kids from 7 states are in Knoxville this week, spending their days doing service projects all over East Tennessee.
They're participating in the Catholic HEART Workcamp, also known as Helping Everyone Attain Relief Today, starting June 30th and running through July 6th.
During the day the nearly 300 teens will be doing community service work, and at night they'll join in faith filled programs.
This is Knoxville's sixth year to host the event. The teens are camping out at All Saints Catholic Church and Knoxville Catholic High School.
The workcamp is partnering with several local groups including Knoxville-Knox County Community Action Committee, Child and Family Tennessee, Second Harvest Food Bank, Salvation Army, KPD Safety City, Caris Healthcare, Habitat for Humanity, Beardsley Farms, and the Boys and Girls Club of the Tennessee Valley.
Projects include painting, yard work, home repair, light construction, working with children and the elderly and more
"It's a really great experience. I love getting to help the community," said high school student Danielle Roques.
Roques is working with several other teens building a wheelchair ramp for an 80-year-old woman living in Knoxville.
"It just means a whole lot. They've all been so sweet and nice, I think I'm just going to adopt all of them," said homeowner Betty Gordon.
Catholic HEART Workcamp began in 1993 and is based outside of Orlando, Florida. CHWC holds 48 camps nationwide, in Jamaica and in Belize each summer with over 13,000 teens participating.
