More than one thousand kids receive "Angel Tree" presents

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Hundreds of kids in Knoxville and Knox County got Christmas presents early this year.

The Salvation Army held it's annual "Angel Tree" distribution.

A large abandoned building on Asheville Highway held all the gifts for the 1,700 kids, that included clothes and toys for many ages.

All of the kids that were signed up for the program got gifts. But it's not always easy to fill the need.

"We've always had some children that have been forgotten. But we've always managed to make sure that they get adopted or we've always managed to make sure they get toys," said Major Albert Villafuerte from the Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army uses reserve funds and gets last minute donations to make sure every child gets a gift.

It's not just kids getting a better Christmas. 100 senior citizens on fixed incomes, and some special needs adults are also getting gifts.

An army of 180 volunteers stepped up to help everything run smoothly.
