KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT)-- U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement has denied the Knox County Sheriff's Office application for 287(g).
According to ICE, a letter has been sent out to Sheriff Jimmy JJ Jones denying the agreement. The sheriff said he hasn't received a letter yet.
He released this statement Tuesday afternoon:
“As of this time we have not received any information from ICE concerning the 287(g) program. It would be inappropriate for me to comment on this matter until such time I receive confirmation or denial from an appropriate official. It is unfortunate that we have received numerous media requests asking for comments regarding the denial of the program when we have received no official communication from the agency.”
The Tennessee Immigration and Refugee Rights Coalition did obtain a copy of the letter.
It stated that the department rejected the application due to resource concerns including lack of funding.
"I was just so happy," said Emma Ellis-Cocigua when she learned the news. "So many organizations came together for this common fight for something we knew that was not right."
