Investigators work to solve cold cases

Knoxville, Tenn. (WVLT) - The Cold Case Unit, made up of members of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office and the Knoxville Police Department, are working together to help solve approximately 200 unsolved cases dating back to the 1960s. Recently, the unit saw success with three different cases as grand juries handed down indictments.

David DeWayne Hopkins, was indicted March 23, 2013 for the felony murder of George Anthony Barrett in July 1994. He was found gagged and beaten to death. Hopkins is in the Knox County Detention Facility under a $750,000 bond.

Another case dates back 25 years ago when Bobbie Lou Hill was killed. Her son, Billy Ray Hill, Jr., who was 19 at the time, has been indicted on first degree murder for her death. He’s in the Knox County Detention Facility with a $500,000 bond. He’s also been charged with solicitation of first degree murder and is under another $500,000 bond for that.

James McKenzie, was indicted for the 1993 killing of Courtney Duncan. Investigators told us ballistics was used in solving the case.

Investigators are unable to send evidence to labs to test for DNA - due to a lack of funds.

Despite the lack of funds, they are still working to bring justice to the many families still waiting.
