WHITE PINE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Just before 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office received a request of a welfare check of Dana Morelock at the 3200 block of Roy Messer Highway in White Pine.
Deputy Mark Denton arrived at the residence at about 3 p.m. The gate was closed at the entrance. As Deputy Denton sat at the entrance, Morelock came to the door and began to curse Deputy Denton and fired several times at him with a pistol.
Denton took cover and notified Sgt. Greer. When Sgt. Greer arrived, Dana Morelock fired again several times using a shotgun.
Sheriff McCoig and the Special Operation Response Team eventually secured the area. Attempts to have Morelock surrender were initially futile, but after the team deployed pepper gas, Morelock surrendered at about 7:30 p.m.
Tennessee Highway Patrol and White Pine Police assisted in shutting down Roy Messer Highway.
Both the Jefferson County EMS and White Pine Fire Dept. were on scene as well.
