Jefferson County lake full of trash

DANDRIDGE, Tenn. (WVLT) - The rain and snow is gone, but one neighborhood is upset about trash the floods left behind.

Parts of Douglas Lake in Jefferson County are full of debris, and we visited one area near Dandridge.

The beach where the boat launch is located, is now packed with bottles, boxes, and even basketballs.

"Propane bottles, refrigerators, tires. I don't see how people are going to be able to swim this summer," said Jerry Horvath, who lives off the lake. "This ain't dirt underneath here, this is water underneath this trash."

Looking into the distance, you can still see the beauty of why Horvath moved to Douglas Lake.

But up close, it's the worst mess he's experienced.

"This is the first time, and every cove on this side of the lake has got this same kind of trash as I speak to you," said Horvath.

This time of year, the lake area by his house is usually completely dry, until April when the lake fills back up.

By summer, his grandchildren are usually playing in the water. But no telling what's in it now.

"To be honest with you, it'd be scary to have my grandkids swim in this water this spring or summer," said Horvath.

He has no idea what the solution is, but hopes that someone will step up to help clean the lake.

The Tennessee Valley Authority usually drains the water in Douglas Lake, and other bodies of water starting in September, refilling it in April. But with all the recent rain, the TVA had to let even more water out.
