Jellico loses insurance, puts public safety in park

JELLICO, Tenn. (WVLT) --- Too many missed payments, too many workers comp claims. That was, essentially, the message Mayor Les Stiers got on April 10th when the City's insurance company called him to tell him they were no longer covered.

He called the state. What do you do? They told him if he couldn't get coverage he would have to park all the City vehicles or risk a lawsuit.

"I don't want to injure the people who work for the city, I don't want to injure the citizens and I don't want to injure the town." Stiers told us.

So the cars were parked.

No police patrols, no garbage pickup, no City service calls.

Garbage crews walked door to door and police stayed in their office to do paperwork.

Until the close of business on Friday, one day after the cars were parked.

The phone conversation that may have saved lives.

Jellico is now insured.
