LOUDON, Tenn. (AP) -- A Loudon County jury has acquitted a retirement village resident in the killing of a neighbor.
According to The Knoxville News Sentinel, the not guilty verdict was returned late Wednesday afternoon in the second-degree murder trial of 71-year-old Norman Whitton.
Whitton was charged in the April 2010 shooting death of 74-year-old Larry Butcher in Tellico Village, where both men lived.
Whitton told sheriff's investigators at the time of the incident that he had honked his horn at Butcher, who was driving a golf cart and that Butcher got off the cart, reached through Whitton's open car window and was choking him. Whitton shot Butcher once in the chest with a .38-caliber pistol
The defense did not present witnesses and the jury deliberated the case for about two hours.
