JACKSBORO, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The trial for accused Campbell County High School shooter Kenny Bartley is underway.
Bartley is accused off shooting and killing assistant principal Ken Bruce and wounding principal Gary Seale and assistant principal Jim Pierce in 2005.
Bartley pleaded guilty to the shootings in 2007, but a judge granted him a trial in 2011 after attorneys argued he hadn't been able to discuss the deal with his parents and he was pressured into it.
Bartley faces first degree murder, felony murder, two counts of attempted murder and gun and drug charges.
During opening statements, the District Attorney said Bartley was late for school on November 8, 2005 because he was busy loading up his pockets with a gun and Xanax pills, arguing Bartley purposely shot Bruce, Seale and Pierce.
But defense attorney Greg Isaacs says Bartley brought the gun to school to trade for drugs because he was self-medicating and trying to deal with his parents' divorce. One of Bartley's friends, Trent McCullah, told jurors Bartley took Xanax right before the school resource officer came to take him to the office.
"We did a few pills, busted them up, I don't know if it was two or three. I don't really know - we just snorted them," said McCullah.
School resource officer Susan Phillips said students told her Bartley had a gun, so she alerted her supervisors, who told her to bring Bartley to the office so they could search him.
Phillips said she waited with Bartley and Assistant Principal Jim Pierce in Pierce's office for about 15 minutes until Principal Gary Seale and Assistant Principal Ken Bruce showed up. That's when she said she told Seale that Bartley might have a gun and left the office as Seale and Bruce went in. She said five minutes later, she heard gun shots.
"Mr. Seale came to the door, said we needed to put the school on lockdown, we needed an ambulance."
During cross examination, Phillips told Defense Attorney Greg Isaacs that she had no training as a SRO. She said she didn't immediately take the gun from Bartley because she never saw it and wasn't allowed to search male students.
The trial will continue Tuesday morning at 9 a.m.
