KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT/AP) -- A high-speed chase takes a deadly turn when a fleeing driver overcorrects while trying to escape from pursuing KPD officers early Thursday morning, according to the Knoxville Police Dept.
Authorities said the chase began when the driver, Brandon Paris, spotted an officer, who was searching for another suspect, on Mayfield Street. Paris quickly turned his SUV around and took off. Spotting the SUV, the officer doubled back, but by the he caught up Paris had already crashed.
A police investigation indicated Paris went off the left side of the road at a high rate of speed, overcorrected, and ran off the other side, striking a utility pole and a tree. The SUV then flipped and hit another tree before coming to a rest on its roof. He was pronounced dead on the scene. Officials noted the officer had never activated her emergency equipment and hadn't caught up to the vehicle before it crashed.
Police are still trying to locate the suspect for whom the officer had originally been searching. That search began when when another officer had stopped a different SUV around 3:30 a.m. for running a stop sign and the driver ran away on foot. After he got out, the SUV rolled backwards and hit the police cruiser, causing minor damage.
Records show Paris was on probation for running from police earlier.
