Last minute preps underway for Salvation Army Christmas Dinner

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- While many of us are making last minute preparations for their family's Christmas dinner on Tuesday, twenty volunteers are hustling to get ready for one of the biggest ones in the area, the Salvation Army's.

“It’s a huge event for us,” said Thomas Orth, Kitchen Director at The Salvation Army. “It’s an opportunity for us to share Christ’s love with our community on the day that we celebrate His birth.”

Up to a thousand people are expected on what has become a Christmas Day tradition for the organization. The kitchen staff has been busy for days already, cooking turkeys and hams, making homemade stuffing, and baking pies.

It’s a challenge to fit everyone into our facility and the preparations are a lot of work, but it is definitely worth it,” added Orth.

The volunteers have given their time to make the holiday a little more special for those less fortunate. Doors open at noon and they plan on serving until 4:30 p.m.

“Our volunteers are very eager to serve on Christmas,” said Volunteer Coordinator, Maria Haun. “Like everything at The Salvation Army, it takes a team of employees, donors and volunteers to make it a success.”
