Local inspection company offers tips to keep family safe

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. (WVLT) Life Safety Inspections is responsible for making sure some of East Tennessee's biggest businesses and homes are prepared in case of a fire. Its life saving tips can help all of us make sure our home is better equipped in case of an emergency.

First, fire extinguishers shouldn't be left under the kitchen sink. Other nearby chemicals can let off vapors that mix creating an opportunity for an explosion that could seriously injure you or your family.

Keep an extinguisher near your bed in case you need to use it as a means of escape. Use the P.A.S.S. method: pull, aim, squeeze and sweep.

It's also important to shake up the powder inside the extinguisher every six months. Life Safety suggests doing this when you change your air filters. Flip the extinguisher upside down and beat the powder around so it doesn't settle in the bottom like a rock.

Every 6 years, a company like Life Safety can check the inside for rust and replace parts not functioning correctly.

Life Safety Inspections will have an open house Tuesday at its new location on Brisbane off of Oak Ridge Turnpike. Hot dogs will be served at 10 a.m. A ribbon will be but at 10:30.
