Man shot, killed in late night officer involved shooting

DANDRIDGE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A late night call to police about a man who needed to be taken to a mental hospital leads to an fatal officer-involved shooting on Sunday, according to the Jefferson Co. Sheriff's Office.

Shortly before 10:30 p.m., the caller told police the 41 year-old man would be at Zoomers in Dandridge and, if he wasn't there, at 875 Lakeshore Drive.

After stopping by Zoomers, officers went to the home where the man reportedly charged them with a weapon in each hand as they got out of their car. Sheriff G.W. "Bud" McCoig said the man refused the officers order to drop his weapons before he was shot three times.

"When the officer arrived, as he was exiting his car, he sees a subject coming at him with a weapon in each hand and he orders him to drop it," said McCoig. "He orders him to drop the weapon, the subject kept charging at him. he had no choice except to fire his weapon."

He died at the scene.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the Attorney General's Office, and Jefferson Co. Sheriff's Investigators all responded to the scene and began their investigation.

"We all do a joint investigation of it to see all the facts and get everything together exactly what happened," said McCoig.

The officer, who was not identified, has been placed on paid administrative leave as per department policy, McCoig added.

The victim's name hasn't been released until his family is notified.
