PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. (AP) -- Police in Pigeon Forge are trying to find a thief who stole a cash box from a Girl Scout booth at an Independence Day celebration.
Booth chairwoman Jerri Ewell told The Mountain Press the box held an estimated $3,000 to $4,000 -- proceeds from the girls selling cookies and Fourth of July novelties during the day.
Ewell said when people were watching the fireworks that night, a man in his mid- to late 20s was seen reaching into the booth, grabbing the cash box and running. Several people chased him and shouted at him, but the man disappeared into a commercial campground next door.
The money would have gone to pay for Girl Scout uniforms, books and other troop costs. Tips should be phoned to the Pigeon Forge Police Department.
