NORTH KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) - Here's one thing that doesn't need searching for: a solution to a major traffic problem.

The intersection of Emory Road and Andersonville Pike in Knox County is notorious for creating a line of cars as far as the eye can see.

Beaver Dam Baptist Church sits right by the intersection, and you can see the traffic buildup right across the street.

"I've been here five and a half years and it's been a headache that long. So it's safe to say the locals will say it's been a headache long before that," said Church Pastor Dr. Alan Price.

The most convenient way to get home for Dr. Price is to take Emory Road, but he says lots of times he'll have to go another way.

"I know my times, and I avoid that intersection at some times during the day," said Price. "It's a four way stop for one thing, and I think some folks have a hard time traversing that. And also there's a lot of traffic flow through here, with various schools in the area."

He was one of the many in the area excited when word came that construction was starting to help with traffic flow, including a stop light.

"I think it's going to be good for the community. It's going to alleviate a lot of congestion, and it's going to be a much safer intersection for our drivers and our students that are walking around from school, and our church people," said Craig Wagoner, who lives near-by.

It will likely be a pain for neighbors, drivers, and for businesses in the area. But on Monday, County Mayor Tim Burchett told Local 8 News that it's a means to an end of traffic problems in that area of Halls.

"Short-term discomfort is going to provide for some long-term satisfaction in this project," said Mayor Burchett.

He also hopes that taking care of the traffic problem will help promote the growth of businesses in the area.

He said the decision on construction was made after listening to suggestions from both neighbors and businesses impacted by the intersection.
