Tee Martin departs for USC Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Former Vol quarterback Tee Martin turned down new UT head coach Butch Jones's offer to return to his old stomping ground. Sources confirmed Martin has spurned Jones offer and will remain an assistant coach under Lane Kiffin at USC.
Jones offered Martin the wide receiver coach job on Sunday, the same one he has with the Trojans on Lane Kiffin's staff.
Tuesday morning, Martin boarded a plane to return to Los Angeles without saying whether or not he will accept the position offered to Jones.
"Emotionally everyone should know how I feel, but this isn't an emotional decision. It's a career decision," said Martin as he was getting ready to depart.
Martin said he came back to Knoxville because he wanted to meet with Jones face-to-face, adding that he came away impressed with the new tone in Knoxville.
"There is a good vibe around the building and you can tell he has a good energy," said Martin. "No matter what I decide you can tell that he's going to be successful."
Tee Martin led the Vols on a magical run back in 1998, leading Tennessee to a win over Florida State and the first BCS National Championship.
Prior to the Trojans' job, Martin was at Kentucky, where he also coached wide receivers.
