Mayor Rogero welcomes IBM's Smarter Cities Team

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- IBM's Smarter Cities team arrived in Knoxville on Tuesday, ready to help the city and its partners find ways to reduce residential emergency utility bills. The team, which is made up of five experts from three countries, was welcomed by Mayor Madeline Rogero.

“This team will provide valuable expertise and objective outside analysis to help us address a chronic problem of high utility bills and home energy inefficiency for some of our most vulnerable citizens,” said Rogero.

Knoxville was selected as a Smarter City n November of last year. In their application, city leaders asked for help finding the best way to provide to weatherization and energy education services to residents who receive emergency utility assistance. The city hopes this will reduce the number of people who apply for aid each year.

The IBM Smarter Cities Challenge is a $50 million, three-year, 100-city competitive grant program providing each winning city with $400,000 worth of consulting services. Its IBM;s largest philanthropic initiative.
