JACKSBORO, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A group of officers and rescue workers belonging to various law enforcement motorcycle clubs rode for a single cause on Saturday - to help Scott County deputy Roger Douglas.
"Big family guy - talks about his kids. He loves his kids. He'd tell anybody on any day - he'll do anything for his kids," said Josh Kennedy, a patrolman with the Oneida City Police who used to work with Douglas.
Earlier this month, tragedy struck the Douglas family. 17-year-old Shadara Douglas collapsed without a pulse. The hospital in Scott County is closed, so paramedics rushed her to East Tennessee Children's Hospital in Knoxville. She didn't survive and now her family is left with medical bills it can't afford, since Douglas doesn't have health insurance.
"Insurance is very expensive. There's a lot of them out there that don't have it - especially a family plan. The family plans are really expensive," said Esley Day, who works with Douglas at the Scott County Sheriff's Department.
All proceeds from the ride from Jacksboro Middle School to Oneida City Park will go directly to the Douglas family. It's something those who know Deputy Douglas - and even those who don't - say is the right thing to do.
"I have a young child and I can't imagine having to bury my own child, let alone a friend of mine who I've worked along side of. My heart just sank, went out for him," said Kennedy.
"Anyone in need, if we can possibly help them, we're going to do our best to help them," said Mike "Smiling Bob" Starrett, with the Jacksboro Police Department.
