KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A string of wrecks on I-40 West sent one person to the hospital and backed up rush hour traffic heading into Knoxville early Thursday morning, according to the Knoxville Police Dept.
Their preliminary reports indicate that it all started when a Chevrolet and Honda collided on the highway between the Midway Rd. and Strawberry Plains Pike exits shortly after 5:00 a.m.
The Chevy spun out into the median. The driver and passenger who were in the Honda got out and went over to the other vehicle -- leaving their car in the roadway with its lights off.
That's when a double-semi came up and hit the Honda still stopped in the road, broke apart and ran off the right shoulder. The driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Seeing the wreck ahead, the driver of a second semi slammed on the brakes and ended up jackknifing the tractor trailer. It rolled over onto the shoulder.
The driver and passenger of the car left in the road fled the scene.
Police say the shoulder and right lane of I-40 will be closed for a while while crews empty the trucks and remove them.
All lanes of traffic are back open at this time.
