SPEEDWELL, Tenn. (WVLT) - The National Guard has arrived in Claiborne County where an EF-3 tornado destroyed homes last week.

TEMA is also in the area and say they'll be there for another week.

The mission is to clear away debris that piled up after the storm.

TDEC approved a site on Old Highway 63 where some trees had to be knocked down and burned.

"Well the whole process is difficult. You see the damage and destruction which was left," David Purkey of TEMA says. "But with good planning and that's what TEMA does best, working with the other agencies and with local governments, with good planning we can handle anything. Sometimes counties get overwhelmed with emergency situations and when they do that's when the state of TN can come in and help and Gov. Haslam has approved this task force for us to come in and remove debris and take a lot off."

As of Monday afternoon, 12 loads have been taken to the burn pile and three loads have been taken to the landfill.

The guard is using three ton dump trucks for wood debris and 10 ton dump trucks from TDOT for debris to be taken to the landfill.

It brought heavy machinery to help with the removal. But they can't go onto your property to get it. So you must push it out to the roadway.

If you have damage to report, Claiborne county is taking calls at 423-626-9617.

It is important that you report damage so the state can qualify for federal disaster relief.
