Networking: Make the most of all those 4th of July parties

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- With parties and get togethers, the 4th of July can be a time to shine. Felecia Slattery tells you how you can make the most of your holiday weekend and beyond.

30-second "Elevator Speeches" don't work anymore."

People are busier now than they've ever been and you're competing with their smart phones, tablets, and other devices for attention. Recently, The Wall Street Journal even called Twitter the "new elevator speech" because people need fast info in 140 characters or less otherwise they'll lose interest. Elevator speeches are long, rambling and they're not about connecting with other people.

What to do instead of an "Elevator Speeches"

Stars like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie never have to introduce themselves. Why? Because they are recognizable figures. Speaking of Twitter, anyone can use the power of social media to become a recognized figure in their community or work industry. More on the power of social media and becoming like a movie star in your community/industry. Get known before you go out.

What you should do in that first conversation with people you meet at barbecues and events this weekend

  1. Don't tell your whole life story
  2. Don't monopolize the whole conversation
  3. Don't ask yes or no questionsInstead ask how did you get started and watch the joy unfold
