KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)--More kids can soon get some after school help thanks to a new building Wesley House has bought from the Boys and Girls Club of East Tennessee. We took you inside the Laura Cansler facility on Reynolds Street in Knoxville.
The old building they are in now, is a little over 6,000 square feet. .
The new place is 26,000 square feet, able to serve four to five times more community children. Wesley house has been around for more than 100 years, meeting the needs of local families by providing a place for their children to grow in their education. Wesley House Executive Director Tim Adams says, "Our focus in what we do in after school care is on educational enrichment and tutoring."
They have wanted to help more families for a while, but never found the right opportunity - until now. Adams says, "The board has been dreaming about expansion since 2006 to 2007. All of the classrooms are bigger. All of our classrooms are more the size of Sunday school rooms."
Right now nearly 60 children are enrolled. Once they move to the new building they can serve more than twice that number. Adams adds, "We will move our entire operation here. This will allow us to reach probably, you know, the Boys and Girls Club is doing 145 kids or so in this building every night. So that's going to allow us to almost triple the number of children we can reach."
An added bonus is the new building which is right next to a park with a pool, a basketball court and baseball field available for the kids.
Adams also says, "Almost anybody can qualify to come to Wesley House. There's not a big technical process. It's just a matter of calling to check."
