KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)--Friends of Literacy just started a New Readers Class for adults who can't read.
One student shared her story with us.
It looks like an elementary school classroom, but the students are much older. New Readers Teacher Sherry Johnson says, "I think anybody can learn. I don't believe on giving up on students."
Sherry Johnson has been teaching for 25 years.
She heads up this class because it's rewarding.
Johnson says, "A lot of students think they can't learn, but they really can. Just seeing that light go on is very rewarding. They may say I get it or yay."
One out of every 12 adults in Knox County can't read above a 6th grade level.
Dominique Brown is one of Sherry's students.
She's always been embarassed not knowing how to read well.
Dominique Brown says, "If I didn't know a word, I would have to go ask somebody else and sometimes people make fun of you."
Dominique wants to be a nurse because her daughter has cerebral palsy.
She says nothing will stand in her way of her education.
Brown says, "Education is everything. You can't make it in this world without it."
Thanks to the new readers class and with Sherry's help Dominique will soon reach her dreams.
