New York Times tracks incentive dollars, are we getting our money's worth?

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) --- Tennessee spends one and half billion dollars every year in incentives and grants, in part to attract business.

The New York Times followed every dollar and something might stand out. They looked at every city in the State and to put things in prespective look at this.

Memphis was awarded $293 million in that time period and Knoxville, well Just $650,000 and headed our way.

And when we looked into the company it was awarded to we found out all the cash was rescinded, never spent.

The vast majority of State incentives go to the west and middle parts of the state.

For Representative Ryan Haynes its an example of how the Capitol can get it wrong.

"I think that's what happens when government is trying to pick winners and losers and, quite frankly, if were going to have these programs were going to need to get our fair share," Haynes said.

So does the number of incentives we get reflect how much our economy grows?

Well not according to another study, this one by the Brookings Institute.

That study found Metropolitan Knoxville to be one of only 3 in the country to grow past recession levels.
