PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Pigeon Forge is getting set to open a new $8 million dollar city park that expands recreation services for people who live in the city.
Pigeon Forge has developed a 118 acre site in 2 phases and the first part of Wears Farm City Park is finished.
The new park is home to new softball/baseball fields, the city's first football field, and play areas. Parks and Recreation Director John Wilbanks says the new fields will give kids the best playing surfaces possible.
"The quality of the fields here are superior," said Wilbanks. "Probably superior to any in east Tennessee, tremendous athletic facilities."
Mayor David Wear says the park will not only benefit people who live in the city, but will attract sports tournaments to the area.
"We're going to continue on with what we were doing at the old city park. with the travel teams, tournaments, baseball softball tournaments that bring an economic impact to the area," said Wear. "It's a beautiful place, a lot of hard work went into this."
It took nearly a year to get the park complete. Right now it's mostly done all but a playground area. City crews say they have to wait for the weather to get better to finish part of it.
The Forever Park Foundation, is looking for private donations to develop more areas of the park. Keith Whaley says they hope to build a second playground area for young kids.
"It's a playground that was not included in the original park plans, so we're hoping to get enough money raised to get that project started," said Whaley.
The park will officially open on Friday and will be open daily from 6am to 10pm.
